What Is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized offshoot of CBT designed to help people manage emotion dysregulation and intense emotions, often associated with BPD but also transformative for a wide array of mental health conditions. DBT combines acceptance strategies with a strong focus on change—balancing mindfulness with practical efforts to cultivate stability, connection, and life‑affirming behavior.

DBT has been shown to reduce self‑harm, decrease suicidal thoughts, and improve resilience. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it systematically teaches specific DBT skills that clients apply in everyday challenges.

The Four Core DBT Skills

Our DBT therapy at Aspen View focuses on four essential modules designed to support growth across all areas of life:

  • Mindfulness: Enhances awareness and acceptance of the present moment—reducing reactivity to distress.
  • Distress Tolerance: Offers tools to survive crises without resorting to harmful behavior when emotions escalate.
  • Emotion Regulation: Empowers clients to identify and decrease vulnerability to intense emotions, replacing them with balance.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Teaches confidence, boundary-setting, and communication that strengthens relationships.

These skills are practiced in skills training groups, reinforced in individual therapy sessions, and codified into a treatment plan tailored to each client’s unique needs and mental health issues.
