What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based branch of contextual behavioral science. Rather than trying to eliminate intrusive thoughts or unwanted emotions, ACT helps you learn to accept them as part of the human experience. This shifts the focus away from avoidance and toward living a meaningful life—guided by your personal values, even in the presence of discomfort.

Through six core processes, ACT supports deep transformation:

  • Acceptance of internal experiences
  • Cognitive defusion, or stepping back from negative thinking
  • Awareness of the present moment
  • Self as context, the unchanging observer of thoughts
  • Clarification of core values
  • Committed action toward value-driven living

Combined, these create psychological flexibility—the engine that powers meaningful, sustainable change in mental health.

Why Use ACT in Greeley?

Living in Colorado offers unique benefits—and challenges. From outdoor pursuits in the Rockies to balancing busy lives in Denver and beyond, locals often grapple with issues like chronic pain, stress from life transitions, and tension between achievement and presence. ACT addresses these from the inside out, offering practical techniques for everyday relief.

Clients report improved…

  • Ability to stay present, even during emotional storms
  • Less reactivity toward anxious or obsessive thoughts (like in OCD)
  • Stronger alignment between actions and personal values
  • Increased self-compassion and reduced shame around mental health
  • Better handling of relationship issues, social anxiety, or parent/teen challenges

ACT isn’t just talk therapy; it’s a toolkit for building a life worth living—and doing it with clarity and purpose.

How ACT Works in Therapy

At Aspen View, each ACT therapist begins with an in-depth intake to understand your mental health history, current stressors, and goals. From there, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan focused on the six core processes of ACT, woven into weekly therapy sessions that may be individual, couples, or group-based.

A sample plan might include:

  • Acceptance exercises (e.g., observing bodily sensations with curiosity)
  • Cognitive defusion practices to untangle from automatic negative thoughts
  • Values exploration to define what truly matters to you
  • Guided imagery or mindfulness practices to deepen presence
  • Committed action planning, where small steps forward build momentum
  • Integration of other modalities like EMDR or DBT if trauma or emotion regulation issues arise

This structure means ACT moves beyond theory, giving you tools that integrate into daily life—whether you’re a student, parent, or career professional.
