Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that causes intense changes in energy, mood, and activity levels. People may cycle between periods of mania or hypomania—marked by high energy, impulsivity, and sometimes risky behavior—and depressive episodes characterized by low mood, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily activities. For some, these mood shifts may happen only a few times a year; for others, they may occur more frequently.

Common symptoms include:

  • Racing thoughts and difficulty focusing
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Extreme emotional highs and lows
  • Impulsive spending or decision-making during manic episodes
  • Feelings of hopelessness during depressive periods
  • Challenges maintaining work, school, and relationships

Because bipolar disorder often overlaps with substance use disorders, anxiety, or a personality disorder, it requires a treatment approach that addresses co-occurring disorders alongside mood regulation.

Our Approach to Bipolar Disorder Treatment

No two clients experience bipolar disorder the same way, which is why we believe in personalized care from the very start. When you or a loved one comes to us for help, we begin with a comprehensive evaluation to understand your history, mental health disorders, medical needs, and personal goals.

From there, we create a treatment plan tailored to your unique situation. This may include therapy, medication management, group therapy, family therapy, or even dual diagnosis treatment if a substance abuse concern is present. Every therapy session—whether individual or group—is rooted in the latest research on mental health treatment and is delivered by licensed clinicians who are passionate about helping clients reclaim their lives.

Evidence-Based Therapies We Offer

Our treatment center offers a wide range of evidence-based therapies that can be combined into your treatment program:

Levels of Care

We provide flexible levels of care so clients can receive the right support at the right time:

While we are not a residential treatment facility, we work closely with recovery centers and inpatient programs to ensure clients receive seamless care if a higher level of care is needed.

Medication Management

Medication can be a vital part of bipolar disorder treatment. Our psychiatric team provides ongoing medication management to ensure that prescriptions are effective and adjusted as needed. This includes monitoring for side effects, evaluating symptom changes, and making dosage modifications to optimize mood stability.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders

At Aspen View, we understand that deciding whether to take medication for anxiety can feel overwhelming. That’s why we approach it as just one of many evidence-based options, never a requirement. While medications like SSRIs and SNRIs can be highly effective—especially when anxiety symptoms are persistent or interfering with daily life—we respect that every person’s comfort level is different. Our role is to provide clear information, not pressure, and to support you in making choices that align with your values. For those who do choose to explore medication, we take a thoughtful, personalized approach. These medications can help balance the brain’s stress and mood systems, making it easier to engage in therapy and return to a sense of stability. But whether or not medication is part of your plan, we’ll work with you to build a treatment path that’s supportive, manageable, and grounded in what feels right for you.

We welcome adults and adolescents who are ready to take the next step toward recovery and are committed to creating an environment where mental health care is compassionate, accessible, and effective.
